Personal Records eagerly presents the debut EP 'Laughing' from the enigmatic Olaf.
Mischievously genre evading, hauntingly playful and sardonically upbeat Laughing toggles between cold mechanical atmospherics, bouncy dance-beat arrangements and moody trip-hop dirges. Olaf’s textural palette effortlessly weaves Seinfeld style slap synth bass with lush ambient pads, 80s gated drum reverbs with crunchy sampled vocals. The songs firmly plant one foot in the here, another in the then and the third in what’s to come.
Vocally Olaf oscillates between these distinct dimensions by deploying wraith-like falsettos, torch song bellows and crooning like some sultry r&b crone. Take one part personal prophecy, one anecdotal agony another existential ecstasy and you get Laughing. Whether it’s with or at us Olaf laughs remains to be revealed.
