Soul Food is as apt an introduction as any to the expansive & elusive legacy of Cabral Jacobs, a veteran of Montreal’s obscure musical underground. Four singular compositions that have as much in common as they do in contrast, this ep is a microdose of the disorienting, multi-faceted output of this prolific multi-instrumentalist, producer, performer & composer shrouded in mystery.

Avant ça opens things with up in a sun-baked haze of backwards mariachi while the title cut sets a 12-string blues lick & opera sample to a mechanical groove. Spider’s Web weaves Sun Ra-esque tones & textures with lo-fi atmospherics before The Sun itself shows us the winding & weary road home with its triumphant melody of frustrated finger work.

This release connects Personal records proudly to a singular figure whose extensive body work of speaks for itself.
