When we started emailing with Gretchen about releasing her material under the Petronn Sphene moniker, I knew the music in her demos was capturing some very visceral, personal feelings for me that I could argue pertain to my transness, my gayness or my womanhood but which I know (bodily) predate all those sexual-intellectual identifiers I’ve come to cloak myself in.
After we had picked our favourite cuts for the release, Gretchen told us, “Your selections are all the trax which lyrically most directly address the CRISIS IN THE CLUB situation … that encapsulates my experiences which inspired these songs.”
She goes on to list “alienation from club kids, ALIEN IDENTITY amongst the people just in alien costume, being too queer for the queers (and definitely WAY too autistic), being disappointed and confused by queer culture yet having maximal lesbo "big dyke energy" on the dancefloor.
Discovering the dancefloor can be a recalibrating experience. There is endless liberation to be found in liquifying and fluidizing your form through movement in reaction to sound, especially for those of us whose forms get us perceived and policed in special ways. But dancefloors simply are not utopian spaces free of the social dynamics surrounding them.
So, Systems of Sapphic Asymmetry is not a dance music record at all in the traditional sense. It’s more like a sonic interpolation of the rave experience. Like if you made one of those old-fashioned dance step diagrams of somebody’s night at a party and then used that as a graphic score. It’s a record that will hopefully be in some way relatable to everyone who’s ever felt “TOO WEIRD TO LIVE, TOO RARE TO DIE, TOO GAY TO CHILL”, in the words of its creator.
