about

10PERS06

This record was recorded directly to vinyl in an edition of 12 therefore each copy contains a unique performance of the two pieces. The two versions here are vinyl rips of the best takes as heard by the artists.

Lately I’ve been really relaxed by the sounds of Appalachian music – old time reels and jigs. I love the idea of music named for the result of a particular geological process. When I listen to this music, I hear something perfected through persistence yet distinctly, forever rough around the edges. No player ever picks a tune the same way twice. Like the range it’s named for, the music is age-old yet ever unfinished. It lives on through a gradual shifting.

When I hear the music on this record I daydream of sediment, shale, sandstone. The richness of eons of rainwater gathered at the basin beneath a cliff. The places where moss and lichen gather, turning all that time and repetition into nourishment and sustenance. Growth.

Blue Moss’s music does not quite roll like that of the Appalachians – it is formed altogether differently. Rather it flows and falls freely, much like the falls of the Hamilton Escarpment. Call this escarpment music. It is compositions with indeterminable edges. It is variations that hint at an altogether larger whole. A connectedness. A system which solidifies – for a time – before shifting again.

We equate something ‘set in stone’ with permanence. But I think that’s just one rather narrow temporal perspective. These pieces continually gesture towards something in the distance, looming large in our periphery. But Blue Moss are never in a rush to arrive – they’re building landscapes to dream in. - Destiny Rosenberg
