The NPNP trio brings together three musicians who hold not only dear places in my heart & musical path, but also in the many creative communities they animate and interconnect. While the trio bears the emblem of composer and leader Jackson Darby’s solo work, it is undeniably a meeting of minds and individual voices that generates its deeply moving music of ecstatic, embodied meditation.

Darby’s immersive and ever-evolving practice with modular synthesis, tape and modern electronic instruments forms the bellows of the group’s sound. Through sheets of warm drone, cascades of percussive, patchwork synth or nearly unrecognizable manipulated recordings of instruments, Jackson’s sound is central to the compositions as the base layers on the canvas are to a painting. He crafts an abundant sonic space for the players to meet in – each at the pace of their own breath and reflex.

Evelyn Charlotte Jo’s impeccable sense of pulse and expressive phrasing at the drum kit simultaneously anchors and propels group improvisation through the absorbing dronescapes. One has the acute sense of free falling at a comfortable velocity as leaves & branches lightly, sporadically make contact at entirely natural though completely unpredictable intervals. Jo is an interpreter with stick and brush, delivering up-to-the-second transcriptions of complex cosmic information as they spot it in the matrix.

James Goddard’s plaintive saxophone intoning can glisten atop the shimmering pane of synthesizer harmonics and rumbling percussion as though time has stopped before his bursts of lyrical cataclysm send compositions into new, unforeseen avenues. His mbira playing evokes a music box winding up and down as though it were the clock guts of the half mechanical half living breathing organism that is the NPNP Trio.

The Trio’s sound – meeting somewhere between Don Cherry’s Organic Music Society and Steve Roach’s transcendent long-form desert drones – is nothing less than that of three wholly actualized players absolutely possessed by the coming together of their practices. One can hear their shared radical joy of exploration, what a pleasure it is for them to carve a moment in time together and how little they ever want it to end.
