about

10PERS05

A particularly industrial exercise, these pieces were performed 12 times in alternating succession over the course of a weekend in the Personal Touch studio at Durocher as they were cut by lathe,
live-to-disc. I hung out for a bit of one afternoon while Markus and James played, and Jackson recorded. The mood was quietly jovial – goofy, even. It was a sunny, warm late-fall day. The process was one that required many sustained bouts of focus and as it wore on one could almost sense each players’ muscle memory kicking in – a physical fusing with the contours of the piece as the specifics of its content shifted underneath. During my visit, my job was to turn off the vacuum (heard humming on each record, possibly the one almost unchanging performance) which collects the bits of excess vinyl carved out of the blank disc by the cutter head, after each performance had been rendered, and to turn it back on before the next recording began. The pieces are well-suited to this unique format, making the most of the ways time and repetition can mould and remould the musical experience of both the performer and listener. Where Lake‘s staccato tapestry weaves in and out of Moten’s immaculate verse with a soft agility, Goddard’s mbira near-mechanically rises and falls before
his saxophone’s plaintive drones are born as murmurs, swell into cries then lapse desperately into growls before dissipating. But your copy might sound totally different than mine.

The recordings posted here are ripped from two of the direct-to-disc vinyl records.
